Holland & Knight opens Colombia office

Miami-based law firm Holland & Knight has announced plans to stretch its Latin America presence with the opening of a new office in Bogota, Colombia.

First revealed by The Lawyer (15 February 2012),the office will offer counsel to non-Colombian companies that wish to enter the Colombian market.

According to the firm the new office will open in April, with partner Enrique Gomez-Pinzon moving from the firm’s Washington, DC office to lead the Colombia operation as executive partner.

Pinzon began his legal career in Colombia and has extensive experience in the region, serving as director of the Colombian Trade Bureau in Washington, DC, where he represented the Colombian government and various Colombian industries.  

When asked about the significance of the new office, managing partner Steve Sonberg told The Lawyer: ‘‘We’ve been very active in Latin America for over 30 years and our number of transactions in Colombia has increased significantly. The changes in government over the last five or 10 years has hugely changed the business environment here.’’

‘‘Colombia has transformed in the last decade,’’ added Miami-based partner Robert Pupo. ‘‘There’s now a tremendous interest from the outside, alongside huge growth from Colombian companies. The increase in economic and political stability gives way to tremendous opportunity.’’

Holland & Knight’s recent Colombian engagements include advising Grupo Pichincha of Ecuador in connection with its sale to and re-acquisition from AIG.
