London corporate partner Ed Braham has been appointed as global head of corporate at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.
In a surprise appointment, Braham takes over from Germany-based Andreas Fabritius, who has been in the role since 2003.
London corporate chief Mark Rawlinson and financial institutions head Will Lawes had also been hotly tipped for the position (20 July 2009).
Freshfields joint senior partner Konstantin Mettenheimer said Braham had been chosen for his “legal expertise, energy, client focus and strategic vision”.
The decision to appoint Braham was taken by Mettenheimer and co-senior partner Guy Morton.
The global head of corporate had previously been held jointly in Germany and London. Gavin Darlington had shared the role with Fabritius, but he stepped down in 2005.
Braham chairs the London corporate group responsible for private equity and infrastructure, and is co-head of the firm’s global infrastructure and transport group.
His recent work includes advising Best Buy on its $1.1bn joint venture with Carphone Warehouse in May 2008 (8 May 2008).
