Clifford Chance scoops lead role on nuclear power deal

The magic circle firm has been appointed by Horizon Nuclear Power, a 50:50 joint venture between RWE Npower and E.ON UK that will build new UK nuclear power plants.

Clifford Chance has worked with both joint venture partners in the past and this comes as the Government has identified 10 sites destined for nuclear new-build, including sites acquired by the JV partners.

Horizon acquired plots of land earlier this year at Wylfa on the Welsh island of Anglesey and at Oldbury-on-Severn in Gloucestershire, both of which figure on the list of 10 sites considered ripe for new-build.

Horizon will focus on new power stations with a 60-year lifetime and expects to invest more than £15bn developing 6,000MW nuclear capacity by 2025.

The key Clifford Chance team is made up of energy partner Andrew Grenville, planning and environment partner Nigel Howorth, construction partner Tracy London and M&A partner and energy specialist Mark Poulton.
