Chadbourne & Parke will transform the main conference room in its Manhattan office into a hospital ward today as it holds a blood drive in support of the New York Blood Center.

At a time when corporate social responsibility issues are fast rising up the agenda of most major law firms, Chadbourne is underlining its commitment to the local New York community in one of the most basic ways possible.

Around 50 lawyers and staff at the firm are expected to roll up their sleeves later today and donate a pint of blood to NYBC. Although the firm is not alone among New York firms in holding blood drives, it is thought to be one of the most committed.

“What’s special about Chadbourne is that when we need the blood the most, they’re there for us,” said Leslie Gonzalez, a media contact for NYBC.

Chadbourne has been holding blood drives for around 20 years. In 2007, the most recent for which figures are available, 54 New York law firms held blood drives in their offices. The list included Debevoise & Plimpton, Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom and Sullivan & Cromwell.

However, according to Gonzalez, Chadbourne heads the list in terms of the number of drives it holds each year.

“There are lots of other New York law firms that also hold blood drives but typically they’ll do one or maybe two a year,” said Gonzalez. “At Chadbourne they’re very committed to this. Last year they held four drives and we typically get anything from 20 to 70 pints of blood at a time.”
