Celebrations have broken out all over Turkey today as the land of dreaming turrets and scented nargile smoke can now also boast its very own magic circle law firm.
Clifford Chance, never one to follow the herd, is set to launch itself onto the banks of the Bosphorus next year (see story), although quite how much work a one-partner office in a far-flung jurisdiction is going to get is very much up for debate.
But wait, CC is not working alone out on the edge of Europe. Local bar rules mean that the firm has had to form an alliance with local firm Yegin Legal Consultancy, whose sole partner Mete Yegin has been a consultant with the magic circle firm for, like, ages (see story).
The new bit is that finance partner Simon Williams has won the tombola draw at Canary Wharf and will swap Docklands for Istanbul in the spring, taking two associates in tow.
Nicholas Wong, a banking and finance partner in Frankfurt, has previously handled CC’s Turkish relationships. Last year, he told The Lawyer about his Turkey plans – “we have a huge practice there,” he said.
Prophetic words, Nicholas. Soon there’ll be a whole four lawyers in the city. Turkish delight indeed.
