Bristol firm Veale Wasbrough has launched a redundancy consultation affecting up to 26 members of staff.

The firm told staff that around 10 per cent of positions were on the line because of the economic downturn. It is understood that partners are included in the consultation.

Managing partner Simon Heald said the firm was reducing costs and redeploying members of staff between departments to minimise job losses.

He added: “After a detailed review, the initial figure was 10 per cent of the total workforce and all members of staff were informed.

“The appropriate consultation process is nearly completed and I’m pleased to be able to say that we’ve managed to reduce those effected to under eight per cent so far.”

Despite the cuts, the firm has been expanding in some departments. It announced today that corporate finance partner Jos Moule has been recruited from Bristol rival Osborne Clarke.
He joins along with higher education partner Karen Stephenson, who arrived from London South Bank University in March.

This month, Bristol-headquartered Burges Salmon unveiled a major cost-cutting drive which will lead to the loss of 18 lawyers (6 March).

Other Bristol-based firms including Bevan Brittan, Beachcroft and Osborne Clarke have all made redundancies in response to the economic downturn.
