Birmingham City Council (BCC) legal chief Mirza Ahmad faces redundancy after he was unsuccessful in his bid to assume a newly created role of strategic director of resources.

BCC began a restructuring programme earlier this year (22 February 2010), axing a number of senior positions, including Ahmad’s role as corporate director of governance.

Under the new structure 10 high-level positions are to be replaced with four director roles and legal will fall under the strategic director of resources position.

Interviews were held earlier this week and corporate director of resources Paul Dransfield made the cut, winning the role of strategic director of resources.

BCC, which is Europe’s largest metropolitan authority, began the review earlier this year with the bid of creating £1.4m in cost savings.

But in light of yesterday’s Comprehensive Spending Review, which will see local authority budgets slashed by seven per cent, further cuts are expected (20 October 2010).

BCC was unavailable for comment. Ahmad declined to comment.
