Clyde & Co litigator Julian Connerty has exited for Signature litigation over conflict issues related to RBS’s £4bn shareholder battle.
Connerty said the principal claimant in the mammoth case – which is bringing £1.2bn of claims – approached Clydes for representation twice but was turned down because of its major clients “that are insurers for RBS and other banks”.
“In my last 18 months at Clydes I turned down two or three big possibilities including RBS because I was acting for insurance clients who didn’t want to see us on the wrong side of a claim,” Connerty said.
His departure follows a string of losses from Clydes’ corporate team.
A colossal group of lawyers are gearing up to fight the shareholder banking case next year.
Herbert Smith Freehills, representing RBS, is expected to run up more than £90m in costs.
