The former head of legal at Friends of the Earth, Phil Michaels, has died after a battle with cancer.
Michaels served as the environmental charity’s head of legal for a decade, winning legal fights on issues such as environmental impact reporting, climate change impact, and access to justice (27 February 2006).
He left the charity to team up with his brother Joe as operations director for solar energy company Joju Solar. Michaels was also a consultant at public and environmental law boutique Harrison Grant.
Prior to joining Friends of the Earth in 2001, Michaels was a media litigator at legacy Theodore Goddard, now Addleshaw Goddard, and undertook voluntary work for the charity.
Michaels was featured in The Lawyer’s Hot 100 in 2007 and was third-placed as in-house lawyer of the year at The Lawyer Awards in 2008. Judges said then that he “set an example for others to follow”.
Michaels leaves a wife, Abi, and three young sons. He was 42.
