Graham White, former executive partner at Slaughter and May, has been appointed to the board of diversity recruitment agency Rare as a non-executive director.
Rare was founded in 2005 by Raphael Mokades with the aim of connecting candidates from diverse backgrounds with careers in high-profile organisations.
White has been involved since the same year, when Mokades pitched him the concept during his tenure as graduate recruitment partner at Slaughters.
White said: “They did a good job of encouraging students to apply who might have thought Slaughters wasn’t for them. They’re very, very professional. They’re not misty-eyed but realistic. They’re quite rigorous in who they put forward.”
He said that Slaughters now hires a few candidates from Rare each year.
Rare’s legal client list currently consists of Allen & Overy, Clifford Chance, Freshfields, Herbert Smith Freehills, Hogan Lovells, Shearman & Sterling, Slaughters and Travers Smith. Ashurst is its latest addition, after signing up to the agency over the summer.
On the non-executive position, White commented: “I hope I’ll be a good sounding-board on what a City firm’s reaction to a candidate might be.”
Mokades said in a statement: “Graham joining our board is a tremendously important moment for us. He has enormous experience of graduate recruitment, of City law, and of helping to run a world class firm. His knowledge and judgement will make a strong board stronger still.”
White is the fifth City lawyer to be involved in Rare’s management, including fellow board member and former Unisys general counsel Sandra Teichman, advisory board member Bill Knight, formerly senior partner of Simmons & Simmons, and former Slaughters associates, associate director Elham Saudi and director Melissa Andrewes.
White spent 35 years at Slaughters, before retiring from the partnership on 30 April 2013. Former head of disputes Richard Clark took over the executive partner mantle, and will remain in the role until 2017 (26 November 2012).
