Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) has won a place on Standard Chartered’s global legal panel for the first time, alongside the bank’s regular magic circle advisers.

The firm has acted for Standard Chartered on a range of transactions, but was previously just on a number of specialist panels such as its investment banking roster.

It is now believed to have won a spot on the bank’s international roster alongside reappointed firms Allen & Overy, Clifford Chance, Linklaters and Slaughter and May.

The panel is also said to include Hogan Lovells and Baker & McKenzie, with the latter recently hiring Standard Chartered’s former group head of legal David Brimacombe as a consultant.

Standard Chartered’s senior group legal counsel James Denham kick-started the panel review at the end of last year. The panel is normally overhauled every two years.

The bank appointed ICAP general counsel Duncan Wales as deputy general counsel in August, after a legal and compliance shake-up saw group general counsel David Fein given responsibility for corporate secretariat issues.

All firms declined to comment.
