Queensland uranium mining — state government sets out its action plan

The Queensland state government has given the green light for uranium mining tenure applications to be processed as early as July 2014. The government has confirmed that minimal changes are required to existing legislation in order to adapt the current mining tenure regime to apply to uranium mining.

An ‘action plan’, setting out the key steps to implementing the new uranium mining regime, was published on 12 September 2013 by the Queensland natural resources and mines minister, Andrew Cripps. The action plan is aimed at implementing a best-practice regulatory framework for uranium mining in Queensland. This was in response to a detailed report by the Uranium Mining Implementation Committee, released in March 2013.
