New EU pilot working hours could ‘cause resentment’, says Eversheds

Jason French-Williams, an expert in transport and employment at Eversheds, has reacted to the decision from the European Parliament regulating pilots’ working hours.

French-Williams said that having to renegotiate shift patterns to comply with the decision of the European Parliament ‘is likely to also cause resentment by some pilots/cabin crew who are happy with their current, long-established, negotiated working patterns, believing they offer a safe method of working.

‘This point is shown by the position taken by the British Airline Pilots Association.’

The position taken by the MEPs is that the decision will bring about a common approach to flight hours across the European Union.
