The first dedicated choral competition in the legal sector is being launched today by Legal Harmony, following in the footsteps of Law Rocks, which has established itself as the top battle of the bands event in the legal sector.
The charity choral event will take place at Southwark Cathedral next May between six organisations.
Organiser David Smith, business development director at Outer Temple Chambers, said: “I have a passion for singing and for choral music. Over the past couple of years or so, there has been a huge increase in firms establishing their own choirs.
”There seemed an obvious opportunity to combine my passion for music and working in the legal sector by giving firms a goal for their choirs. And it’s an opportunity to make a difference by raising funds for and awareness of their nominated charities.”
Smith said that the event organisers would consider joint entries from firms with nascent choirs.
The event is limited to six choirs at the outset on a first come, first served basis. Smith said that if the event was over-subscribed Legal Harmony would consider a series of follow-up events, in the same way that Law Rocks started out. He added that choirs that missed out on a place this time would be given priority for performing on future occasions, and that he was also hopeful of establishing events outside London.
Smith said that Legal Harmony would not dictate repertoire. Choirs are expected to sing three pieces varying in mood and genre. “It could be gospel, classical, something from a musical or a cover of something in the charts.
“We expect the standard to be high, but this is all about people who enjoy singing being inspired to sing at work with their colleagues. We want to inspire them by giving them something to focus on.
“Singing is a great equaliser – it brings together people from different levels of an organisation and it’s great fun.”
