After weeks of deliberation, the shortlist for The Lawyer European Awards 2014 has been revealed.
A host of independent European firms are in the running for the coveted awards, to be held next February in London. Last year’s European Firm of the Year, Noerr (26 October 2012) is among the larger firms named on the shortlist, alongside smaller players from across the continent.
Shortlisted firms have demonstrated not only an ability to win work on key transactions or cases, but a real vision and strategy for their business. Committment to diversity and pro bono was also recognised by judges.
Independent European firms are in the mix with international players in four new transactional categories, European banking & finance, competition, corporate and projects team of the year. These four categories, along with International Firm of the Year, are the only categories which firms headquartered outside Continental Europe are able to enter.
Another new category is Law Firm of the Year: Ukraine and CIS. These countries have been separated from the previous Russia & CIS category in recognition of the growing importance and legal activity of jurisdictions outside Russia. Ukranian firms Arzinger, Asters, Ilyashev & Partners and Sayenko Kharenko have all made the shortlist in this new category.
The awards have been judged by a stellar list of senior private practice and in-house lawyers, including Royal Dutch Shell’s general counsel Peter Rees QC, VimpelCom’s group general counsel Jeffrey McGhie and Unisys general counsel Pavel Klimov. Macfarlanes senior partner Charles Martin, Osborne Clarke managing partner and Stephenson Harwood CEO Sharon White were also among the judges.
The awards will be presented at a glittering ceremony at the Marriott Grosvenor Square, London, on 20 February next year.
