CMS launches in Istanbul

CMS has launched an office in Istanbul, becoming the latest Western firm to establish a footprint in one of Europe’s fastest-growing economies.

Partners Döne Yalçın and John Fitzpatrick are relocating to Istanbul to head up the new venture, which will also be staffed by a number of associates.

The office will focus on project finance and infrastructure work in particular, but will also seek to work in the fields of energy, capital markets and M&A.

CMS is the latest in a string of firms to launch a Turkish office, either alone or in association with a local firm. Earlier this year Pinsent Masons signed a deal with a local lawyer to set up in Istanbul (14 February 2013) while US firm Edwards Wildman formed an association with local boutique Ismen (16 May 2013).

Yalçın previously headed the Turkish desk for CMS’s Austrian firm Reich-Rohrwig Hainz, while TMT-focused Fitzpatrick has most recently been working in CMS Cameron McKenna’s Romanian office.

CMS also has Turkish desks in the Netherlands and Germany.

Fitzpatrick said in a statement that Turkey was of “increasing interest” to international clients, and CMS already had a “deep understanding” of Turkish transactions.

A firm spokesperson said CMS had good relationships with a number of local Turkish firms, but no ‘best friends’ in particular.
