Former KWM Australian head launches advisory boutique

King & Wood Malleson’s (KWM) former Australian managing partner Tony O’Malley has launched an advisory boutique in Sydney with the firm’s former corporate, M&A and tax head Tim Blue.

The duo have co-founded LCR Advisory in a bid to provide strategic legal, corporate and regulatory advice to leading organisations, with a different approach from the traditional law firm model

O’Malley left KWM just under a year ago (24 May 2013) and was replaced by Sue Kench as Australian managing partner.

Blue retired from KWM on 30 June last year. Both he and O’Malley were veteran partners of KWM and its Australian predecessor firm Mallesons Stephen Jaques and played a key part in the global expansion of KWM.

“Our philosophy is to re-position the role of the legal advisor to that we are involved earlier in the decision making and planning process and we can focus on early issue identification and resolution as opposed to implementation,” O’Malley explained.

“We fill the gap that currently exists between astute commercial decision making and legal advice and execution,” Blue added. “Traditional law firms increasingly deliver the transactional and process work on major deals, however their role in formulating strategy and guiding decision-making is often small compared to other advisers. We aim to turn this around.”

Apart from extensive private practice experience, O’Malley also served as deputy general counsel of Australian telecoms company Telstra for five years.
