The new office will be the firm’s first in South East Asia and joins Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo as its fifth Asia office.

Simmons will share office space in the Marina Bay Financial Centre with the firm’s Japanese alliance firm, TMI Associates. The two firms will work together to service the needs of both firm’s Japanese clients in the region as well as sharing a marketing function.

The Singapore office will open with four partners. Alexander Shepherd, Jason Valoti and Peter Wright will all transfer from their current locations within the firm, while Dan Marjanovic joins from Norton Rose.

The office is expected to open with around 15 lawyers in total recruited locally as well as transferring from other Simmons’ offices and Japanese alliance firm, TMI Associates.

Managing partner Jeremy Hoyland said: “We’re a sector focused firm and that’s very much how this office will be built. We’re opening with a heavy focus on energy, infrastructure and financial institutions initially but the other three sectors we focus on – asset management, life sciences and TMT – are also active in the region and we are currently seeking to recruit people with that skill set.”

Shepherd is relocating from Dubai, where he was head of technology, media and telecommunications (TMT).

Valoti will transfer from the Hong Kong office where he acted for international investment banks and investment managers on structured debt capital markets transactions.

Wright will transfer from the firm’s London office where he was focusing on both UK and international energy and infrastructure projects. Marjanovic specialises in banking and projects in Asian financial markets and is currently based in Simmons’ Hong Kong office. He joins the firm from Norton Rose in Sydney where he focused on major financing transactions in the Asia Pacific region.

Simmons announced an alliance with American hedge-fund focused boutique Seward & Kissel last year (4 October 2012). The firm’s third German office opened in Munich in March this year.

Hoyland put a Singapore launch at the top of the firm’s agenda for international expansion last July (23 July 2012).
