Infrastructure, energy and water chief among the government’s priorities

Among the bills announced by the Queen in her opening of this year’s parliamentary session, two have been introduced to enable the progression of the HS2 railway project, one (carried over from the previous session) is designed to reform the electricity market and a further bill intends to do the same for the water industry.

The HS2 Hybrid Bill and the High Speed Rail (Preparation) Bill: The former will provide the Government with the legal power to compulsorily purchase land needed to construct the High Speed Two railway and operate it, along with providing deemed planning permission for the scheme. The latter will provide parliamentary authority for expenditure on property compensation and other essential preparatory works required under the project. Combined, both intend to ensure the high speed progression of the project. Hopefully this will allow for the practical side of the development to begin sooner rather than later…
