Wonga.com scoops up Betfair’s former legal boss

Betfair’s former legal director Justin Hubble has resurfaced at online loans company Wonga.com in the role of legal vice president.

The British payday loan company, which has faced criticism for the high cost of its loans, has been rapidly building its legal team since launching in 2007.

Wonga.com made Kemp Little’s then managing partner Lucy Vernall general counsel in 2011, taking on legacy Herbert Smith partner Henry Raine as regulatory head some months later (21 February 2011).

Hubble, who joined Betfair as head of legal in October 2003, is understood to have been in talks with Wonga for a number of months, having officially left the gambling company in January (17 January 2014).

He quit just months after company secretary Martin Cruddace resigned, having been promoted to the group’s most senior legal position a year earlier.

The team that formerly reported to Hubble – including head of legal Reg Ozcan, head of compliance Chris Harley and head of insider threat Stuart Cooney – now report to Betfair’s chief legal officer Fiona Russell.

Hubble is not understood to be replacing anyone at Wonga.
