Philadelphia’s Cozen O’Connor targets City insurance market with double hire

Philadelphia-based insurance firm Cozen O’Connor has refocused its London strategy with partner hires from Edwards Wildman Palmer and RPC.

Edwards Wildman aerospace reinsurance partner Mark Meyer is understood to have already joined the eight-partner City office alongside RPC insurance partner Paul Dowsey.

The hires comes months after the firm picked up Edwards Wildman associate Stephen Ixer and insurance partner Andrew Tobin, who joined Cozen from Clyde & Co. Tobin had originally worked at Cozen before spending almost a decade at Clydes.

This is the second time in less than a year that the US insurance outfit has hired a team from Edwards Wildman. Last March it opened a Miami office with six Edwards Wildman lawyers.

Sources say that the Philadelphia-based firm, best known for its insurance work, is now focused on building its London capability. Cozen has had a City base since 1998 but until a year ago only had four partners, including one US-qualified lawyer.

Cozen’s clients include major insurers such as AIG, Chubb Insurance and St Pauls. In London the firm has acted for Lloyd’s syndicates including Hiscox and QBE. The firm also worked on the Lockerbie air crash and the Exxon Valdez oil spill cases.

Cozen London managing partner Simon Jones said of the hires: “Together, they are a major strategic asset and will help us consolidate and grow our insurance and litigation firepower.”

The office now has 11 UK-qualified and one US-qualified lawyer in total.
