Shearman & Sterling partner Jo Rickard and Essex Court Chambers heavyweight Joe Smouha QC have been brought in to act for Robert Tchenguiz on the entrepreneur’s damages claims against the SFO, The Lawyer can reveal.
Following yesterday’s news (28 February 2013) that the SFO has instructed Slaughter and May to defend it against damages claims brought by Robert Tchenguiz and his brother Vincent, it has now emerged that Shearman’s Rickard is leading Robert Tchenguiz’s claim, reported to be for £100m.
Rickard has instructed Smouha to lead Matrix Chambers’ Alison Macdonald and Essex Court junior Anton Dudnikov.
Shearman has taken over as the solicitor of record from BCL Burton Copeland as the issues under debate move from the white collar crime and regulatory arena to more commercial issues.
BCL Burton Copeland partners Ian Burton and Richard Sallybanks are continuing to work on the case, following their work for Robert Tchenguiz during the SFO’s failed investigation of the brothers (20 June 2012) and the ensuing judicial review (31 July 2012).
Stephenson Harwood partner Sean Jeffrey has instructed Debevoise & Plimpton partner Peter Goldsmith QC and Fountain Court Chambers’ Bankim Thanki QC and Rosalind Phelps for Vincent Tchenguiz, who has claimed £200m in damages from the SFO.
The hearing over the damages claims is set down for January 2014.
