A ‘century’ of anaerobic digestion in the UK

According to official figures gathered by bioeconomy consultant NNFCC and government-funded organisation WRAP, the number of anaerobic digestion (AD) plants in the UK outside of the water industry has passed the 100 mark, with 106 plants processing up to 5.1 million tonnes of food and farm waste every year and with an installed electrical capacity of more than 88MWe.

Forty-six of these run mainly on food waste and can treat a total of 1.8 million tonnes of food waste a year and generate 56 megawatts of electricity. A further third use agricultural feedstocks such as slurry, manure, crops or residues and the remainder are industrial sites treating waste such as brewery effluent and residues from food processing…
