Ray Sweigart’s primary area of practice is dispute resolution and trial work, with a particular emphasis on jury trials as well as domestic and international arbitration and mediation.
He spent several years as managing partner of Pillsbury’s Washington DC office and leader of our Intellectual Property Practice Group and as co-leader of the firm’s semiconductor team.
He has represented both plaintiffs and defendants in patent infringement and validity, trade secret misappropriation, copyright and trademark disputes and in other complex matters, including arbitration, mediation, intellectual property audits and risk management, intellectual property portfolio development and management, licensing and strategic planning and general business matters, such as anti-bribery and anti-money laundering compliance.
Notably, he successfully defended a major manufacturer against a $110m claim for wilful patent infringement. The National Law Journal recognised this victory as one of the ‘top 10’ most significant defence jury verdicts. In addition to intellectual property litigation, he has focused on a broad spectrum of complex civil litigation, including asbestos litigation defence, admiralty claims litigation and arbitration, creditors’ rights, bankruptcy, foreclosure, construction, environmental and general commercial claims work. He formerly was an assistant US attorney with the US Department of Justice, which he joined after a clerkship with the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
