Osborne Clarke has hired a team of four partners and three associates to kickstart its new Amsterdam office, which formally launched today (2 June).
Former Baker & McKenzie partner Michiel Odink, who led the US-based firm’s IP practice in Amsterdam, has become Osborne Clarke’s first managing partner in the city. Odink joined Baker & McKenzie in 2010 from Allen & Overy, where he spent more than a year on secondment in Fenwick & West’s Silicon Valley office.
He is joined by fellow Baker & McKenzie litigation and arbitration partner Jeroen Bedaux, who specialises in financial services work.
IT partner Jeroen Lub joined from Norton Rose Fulbright having departed from A&O in 2013. His stint at the magic circle firm coincided with that of employment partner Jorgo Tsiris, who also left A&O to join Steins Bisschop & Schepel last year before joining Osborne Clarke.
Odink has previously worked with all four of the office’s founding partners.
The firm initially intends to focus on the digital business sector. However, Odink said it would also take on retail, financial services and energy mandates.
Osborne Clarke has ambitions to expand the firm in coming years. Odink noted: “Growth isn’t a focus in itself, but we’re absolutely looking to get bigger. We have a lot of candidates interested so we’re talking to several partners of international firms and larger Dutch firms who would really like to join Osborne Clarke.”
The firm has set a goal of growing its headcount in Amsterdam to 20 lawyers by the end of its first year, and 40 lawyers after three years.
Osborne Clarke’s managing partner Simon Beswick added: “The recruitment is largely still digital business focused, but we’ll start to look at other sectors in time.”
The office opening marks Osborne Clarke’s fourth since 2013, following launches in Paris (22 July 2013), New York (25 October 2013), Brussels (3 June 2013) and San Francisco (25 March 2014). It becomes the firm’s 18th office globally.
Beswick noted: “The Amsterdam launch is based largely on four things. It’s one of Europe’s largest domestic marketplaces, and is significant for international businesses looking to trade in Europe. It is key for clients in our sectors. Many international companies tend to work from the Netherlands, and there’s a huge amount of good talent available.”
Last month, Osborne Clarke unveiled a turnover increase of 26.8 per cent in 2013/14, with revenue rocketing from £112m to £142m over the course of the last financial year (12 May 2014).
The firm is yet to announce its net profit figure, but it expects the total to increase on the £35m recorded in 2012/13.
