Memery Crystal intellectual property lawyer and leukaemia survivor John Mawhood will be riding in the Fireflies Cycling Tour to raise funds for leukaemia research and treatment, along with his bone marrow donor. The 14th annual tour will take place on 10–18 June 2014.
Launched by film director Ridley Scott in 2001, the Fireflies Tour is an eight-day, 1,000km bike ride across Les Grandes Alpes to Cannes, which follows many of the same Alpine ascents as the Tour de France and arrives mid-week of the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.
Since its inception, the Fireflies Tour has raised more than £1.5m in aid of scientific and clinical research into the causes and treatment of leukaemia and other blood cancers at the Hammersmith Hospital in London.
Mawhood is a leukaemia survivor who underwent a successful bone marrow transplant in 2009. He completed the Fireflies Tour in 2010 and this year will be the first leukaemia survivor to ride along with his bone marrow donor (Zahar Chikishev of Israel).
He is a senior lawyer in the software, financial services and automotive sectors, who is in private practice as a qualified lawyer. He has also served as a company director and general counsel in software businesses.
The Memery Crystal Charitable Trust is sponsoring Mawhood’s participation and has made a charitable contribution to Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.
