Laurence Kaye is a partner and leads the firm’s publishing and digital media team, having merged his leading niche practice with Shoosmiths in 2013.

Kaye provides strategically-focused advice to publishers, media and technology companies on e-commerce projects and on exploitating their intellectual property in digital and ‘offline’ forms. He also advises established brands and start-ups on ‘multi-channel’, e-commerce projects across a range of industries.

He is known for delivering strategic commercial insight and innovative legal solutions with high-quality technical legal work.

Recent work handled by Kaye includes advising:

  • Pottermore.com, the new digital home of the Harry Potter books, on their commercial partnership with Sony, and devising and delivering a multi-jurisdiction legal compliance project for Pottermore.com;
  • Euromonitor, the leading business information company, on a range of contracts for their online services;
  • Dot.Talent, a social media company, on a range of contracts for digital services and products;
  • The Leisure Database Company Limited, the leading market intelligence source for sports and leisure operators, on strategically-based legal advice on a range of contractual and intellectual property matters, including the use of digital technologies to collect, compile and distribute database information;
  • Financial Times, on managing a virtual in-house legal support service;
  • Cognito, a provider of IT solutions for mobile workforces, on a suite of modular, flexible customer contracts;
  • The Harvard Group (formerly Alba Group plc), a manufacturer and distributor of consumer electronic products under ‘Grundig’ and ‘Goodmans’ brands, on a range of information technology work.

Kaye combines this cutting-edge legal work with strategic and policy-related work in the field of copyright and online law. In his capacity as copyright adviser to the European Publishers Council, he has advised and been actively involved on the Data Protection Directives, the Copyright Directive, the Database Directive and the E-Commerce Directive Directives. He also regularly chairs issue-driven workshops for in-house lawyers and has written and led a range of training modules for in house legal teams.

Kaye practises what he preaches. He’s a regular writer and lecturer on copyright, digital media and other IP issues, and an active blogger on digital media law.
