Next week’s 20th anniversary edition of The Lawyer Awards really will be Absolutely Fabulous, with this year’s host revealed to be national treasure Joanna Lumley.
One of Britain’s most high-profile actresses and charity campaigners, Lumley cemented her role as a British institution while playing champagne-swilling TV icon Patsy Stone in UK television series Absoloutely Fabulous.
Her portrayal of fictional fashion editor Patsy, a character best known for her chain-smoking and wine-drinking habits, followed an illustrious career. Starting out as a model in the Sixties, Lumley’s achievements already included playing Purdey in The New Avengers and a Bond girl in the sixth spy film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
More recently, BAFTA-winning Lumley became the public face of a campaign to provide Gurkha veterans with the right to settle in Britain and has fought for a number of animal welfare groups, environmental causes and mental health charities. She has also been the driving force behind the plans to design and construct a unique ‘garden bridge’ across the Thames.
She will host the glittering ceremony a week today (25 June) at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel, where shortlisted firms in a raft of categories will find out if they have won the top prize in the legal industry.
These include Clyde & Co, DWF, Macfarlanes, Mishcon de Reya, Pinsent Masons, RPC and Slater & Gordon for Law Firm of the Year and Essex Court Chambers, Matrix Chambers, No5 Chambers, Serle Court, Thirty Nine Essex Street, 3 Verulam Buildings and Wilberforce Chambers for the 2014 Chambers of the Year accolade.
With such an glamorous host and over 1,300 senior legal professionals confirmed to attend, this is one night in the industry calendar that cannot be missed.
The Lawyer Awards are held in association with Travelers.
