DLA Piper Hong Kong exits continue as corporate partner joins Jun He

DLA Piper’s Hong Kong corporate partner Esther Leung has left to join Chinese firm Jun He, a month after a team of four moved to Winston & Strawn.

Leung has joined Jun He’s Hong Kong office a corporate partner. Her practice focuses on IPOs, public M&A transactions and employment law. She joined DLA Piper in 2006 as a partner from legacy Australian firm Mallesons Stephen Jacques’ Hong Kong office (6 November 2006).

Her departure comes shortly after a team of four corporate lawyers led by former Asia corporate head Mabel Lui moved to Winston & Strawn (2 May 2014).

DLA Piper has been undergoing major strategic changes in Asia. At the end of last year, it unveiled a major overhaul of its management structure in Asia in a bid to increase the integration between the Asia offices and its US partnership (18 December 2013).

In addition, the latest partner move reflects the growing presence of Chinese firms in Hong Kong as they hire more lawyers and partners from international rivals. Apart from Jun He, Fangda and Zhong Lun have also been recruiting from international firms in Hong Kong.

Fangda recently hired former Shearman & Sterling counsel Arnold Pang and former Edwards Wildman corporate partner Andrew Lui (3 January 2014). Zhong Lun has recently appointed Dechert’s Hong Kong managing partner Basil Hwang (13 January 2014) as well as former Reed Smith counsel Victor Pang.

Following Leung’s appointment, Jun He now has six partners and 12 other lawyers in Hong Kong.
