Travers Smith has reached a financial settlement with former trainee Katie Tantum, who last month won a high-profile pregnancy discrimination case against the firm.
The London Central Employment Tribunal found that Travers had not offered Tantum a permanent job in its property practice because she was pregnant.
It dismissed similar claims related to the corporate, tax and litigation groups (17 May 2013).
A remedies hearing scheduled for yesterday (5 June) did not take place as the case settled two weeks ago. Details of the confidential agreement are unclear.
Leigh Day barrister Liz George instructed Cloisters’ David Massarella for Tantum, while Travers handled the case in-house with external advice from Essex Court Chambers’ Edward Brown.
George commented: “I can say that Katie is very happy to have this litigation behind her. It’s obviously been a tremendously stressful event, but she remains delighted with the tribunal judgment. Her aim is now is move forward and make a successful legal career for herself.
“I have been tremendously impressed with Katie throughout. She has certainly shown that she has the mettle to make a first-rate litigator. Let’s hope I am not alone in recognising that.”
Travers is set to review its training contract programme following the outcome of the case and is launching a Diversity Week this autumn as well as running unconscious bias training (28 May 2013).
