Minter Ellison elects new chairman

Australia’s largest independent firm Minter Ellison has elected Brisbane-based corporate partner Bruce Cowley as its new chairman.

Cowley’s appointment will take effect on 1 July, succeeding Sydney-based incumbent Russell Miller, who has completed two full two-year terms.

Cowley, currently serving as the chair of the Brisbane office, has been with Minter Ellison for 32 years. He joined as an articled clerk and was promoted to partner in 1987.

As the new chairman of Minter Ellison, Cowley will continue to guide the firm with a strong Asian regional focus. Under Miller’s guidance, the firm established a financially integrated office in Perth, Western Australia (29 September 2011), launched its second office in mainland China and became one of a few international firms to have an office in Mongolia (1 February 2012).

Miller will return to practice as a member of firm’s Australasian competition group.

According to The Lawyer Asia Pacific 150, Minter Ellison is the fourth largest independent firm in Asia Pacific and the largest independent firm in Australia. The firm had 815 lawyers for 2012, 203 of whom are partners, and 10 offices. The firm’s 2011/12 turnover stood at A$419m with revenue per lawyer of A$690,000.
