Tarafdar will replace Brett Farrell, who joined Media Ingenuity from Barlow Robins in November 2011, as sole counsel at the 45-person company.

Farrell is returning to Sydney, where he started his career as a technology and media lawyer.

He said he would be looking for in-house opportunities in the digital agency space, preferably with a view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. “In the meantime, I’ll be recuperating on the beach,” he said.

Tarafdar will take up her new position on 12 June. Farrell is due to leave on 21 June after an eight-day handover period.

“Melin’s skill set is perfect for an e-commerce business that specialises in online financial services. She not only understands the underlying technology issues but can grasp the regulatory overlay that sits across our entire business. Knitting those two worlds together is a specialist skill,” said Farrell.

Media Ingenuity does not have a formal panel but has used Taylor Wessing for the majority of its external legal advice since Farrell joined the company.

Farrell has also built up a loyal social media following, tweeting as @BrettTechLawyer.
