Chadbourne turns to Sidley’s City office for banking hire

The London office of Chadbourne & Parke has picked up banking and finance partner Partha Pal from the City office of US rival Sidley Austin.

Pal, who has worked for Sidley since 1997 and became a partner in 2004, joined Chadbourne’s partnership today (10 June 2013). He focuses on cross-border banking and structured finance transactions and related restructurings, contentious and regulatory matters.

Calls to Pal’s Sidley Austin number went straight to voicemail last week, so it is not known why he has made the move or if he is bringing any clients with him. In a statement he said he was excited to offer a “very focused service” to both providers and users of debt finance.

There have been various announcements involving Chadbourne over the last week, one of them being the naming of insurance partner Adrian Mecz as new London managing partner (6 June 2013).

The move followed a shake-up of various leadership positions in the EMEA region, with former London head Claude Serfilippi taking on the role of Moscow managing partner and EMEA liaison partner, a new position. The US firm’s Istanbul managing partner Ayşe Yüksel was also given the EMEA-focused title.

According to the firm the new role is aimed at improving communication with the firm’s clients in the region. A spokesperson said: “[It is] designed to promote greater communication and foster improved coordination among the firm’s international offices outside of the Americas.”

It was also announced that Chadbourne lost three partners to Hogan Lovells last week (6 June 2013). The trio included Chadbourne’s former co-head of international arbitration, New-York based Oliver Armas, as well as its co-head of product liability, Phoebe Wilkinson. The third departure was Luis Enrique Graham, the head of Chadbourne’s dispute resolution practice in Mexico City.

Armas in particular will be seen as a coup for Hogan Lovells. He joined Chadbourne in 2008 along with a team of lawyers from the Latin American practice of now-defunt US firm Thacher Proffitt & Wood, a deal that saw Chadbourne launch in Mexico City (11 August 2008).

Meanwhile the group general counsel of Man Group Stephen Ross is to join Sidley Austin as co-head of London investment funds (22 April 2013). The move follows the promotion of Man Group’s head of legal Jasveer Singh to general counsel in March, following Ross’s departure from the FTSE250 group (26 March 2013).
