NLADA presents 2014 Beacon of Justice Award to DLA Piper

DLA Piper has received the 2014 Beacon of Justice Award from the National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA). The award is given to law firms that create and implement innovative legal strategies to aid those unable to afford counsel.

Over the past year, DLA Piper lawyers have devoted about 45,000 pro-bono hours to innovative approaches and new delivery models.

Between 2010 and 2013, the firm has worked with select organisations to institute and operate 15 legal-aid clinics through which more than 600 lawyers and staff helped about 1,500 people in need. The firm has also partnered with numerous corporate clients on many of these pro-bono projects.

The firm’s pro-bono work has reached a number of individuals, including families needing basic legal aid to better support their children’s education; veterans seeking advice and referrals for basic civil legal issues; and undocumented immigrants facing violence who require legal advocates.

NLADA honoured DLA Piper at its Exemplar Awards Dinner on 26 June at The Mayflower Renaissance Hotel in Washington DC.
