Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) has picked up Taylor Wessing competition partner Michael Dietrich to bring the number of partners in Germany to six.
He joins corporate partners Ralf Thaeter and Nico Abel (16 May 2013), real estate partner Hans Kessler (2 July 2013), litigator Mathias Wittinghofer (3 February 2014) and finance partner Kai Liebrich (12 June 2014) in HSF’s Frankfurt base.
German office head Thaeter said Dietrich’s arrival brought the firm “a step closer to full service capability” in Germany.
James Quinney, co-chair of HSF’s global competition, regulation and trade practice added that clients were increasingly wanting advice on German competition issues. As well as having an active competition regulator, the jurisdiction picks up a large amount of follow-on cartel damages litigation. Quinney said HSF was planning to grow a “leading” German competition team.
Taylor Wessing’s capabilities in Germany have generally been growing recently, with the jurisdiction picking up seven new partners in the firm’s recent promotions round (18 June 2014). it also recently hired Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom private equity partner Walter Henle (2 April 2014). The most recent departure was that of restructuring specialist Matthias Kampshoff to McDermott Will & Emery (9 January 2013).
