Fremantle Media hires BBC Worldwide’s Chalmers as new GC

TV company FremantleMedia has hired BBC Worldwide’s director of business & legal affairs, Robin Chalmers, as the replacement for retiring general counsel Sarah Tingay.

Chalmers will start work at FremantleMedia later this year and will report to chief operating and financial officer Sangeeta Desai.

He will be responsible for legal and commercial advice across the full range of businesses within FremantleMedia around the world, including overseeing the company’s IP rights.

FremantleMedia is owned by European entertainment group RTL Networks, itself a subsidiary of German giant Bertelsman. The company is responsible for shows such as X Factor, Neighbours, and Never Mind The Buzzcocks.

As director of business & legal affairs at BBC Worldwide Chalmers was responsible for business affairs, legal, rights, compliance, governance and regulatory support for all of the company’s regional business lines outside of North America.

He reported to general counsel Martyn Freeman, who took up his role in 2011 having been promoted from the director of business & legal affairs position (10 November 2011).

Tingay spent 27 years at FremantleMedia and retires on 30 September.

Chalmers is the second senior in-house lawyer at the BBC to leave the organisation this year, following the departure of head of litigation Nadia Banno for Baker & McKenzie (22 May 2014).
