British Library turns to Mills & Reeve and Veale Wasbrough for employment advice

Mills & Reeve and Veale Wasbrough Vizards (VWV) are to give employment advice to the British Library after winning a mini-tender run by the London Universities Purchasing Consortium (LUPC).

The library, which has a small internal legal team led by legal services head Ricky Olejnik, does not operate a formal panel but uses the LUPC to put contracts in place as required.

“We’re fairly self-contained and do a lot of the work ourselves,” Olejnik said. “As a team we have quite a varied remit; we advise on all aspects of contracts law, some charities and also litigation, if there are trademarks issues for example.

“There’s often a need to get some complex advice on a particular area or some third-party advice.”

In these instances, Olejnik would turn to the LUPC, although the library is not tied in to using the framework and can put out a single tender itself if required.

In addition to Mills & Reeve and VWV, the British Library uses Farrers under the LUPC’s one-stop-shop lot.

The LUPC was originally set up, as its name suggests, as a professional buying organisation for universities and colleges in the capital. It now counts a wide range of other not-for-profit organisations among its membership, including the Imperial War Museum, the National Archives and the National Theatre.

There are currently 13 firms on the LUPC’s legal services panel. They are: Addleshaw Goddard, Bates Wells & Braithwaite, Berrymans Lace Mawer, Blake Lapthorn, Clyde & Co, DWF, Farrer & Co, Michelmores, Mills & Reeve, SGH Martineau, Shoosmiths, Veale Wasbrough Vizards and Weightmans.

The consortium reviews the firms on its panel every three years, with the framework thought to be worth in the region of £30m over that period (16 August 2010).
