Taylor Wessing’s Singapore arm is planning to launch a regional network under which it will form associations with local firms across the South East Asian region.
The group’s Singapore member, RHTLaw Taylor Wessing, will announce the proposed network in the coming months as the firm marks the second anniversary of its tie-up with Taylor Wessing (31 August 2011).
Initially, the firm plans to formalise its relationship with the local firms it has worked with in Indonesia, Vietman, Malaysia and Thailand by entering into an association, but plans to expand its regional network to cover the whole ASEAN (the Association of South East Asian Nations).
“After we’ve integrated into Taylor Wessing, our practice has stabilised over the past few years. We are now surefooted and moving forwarding,” said RHTLaw Taylor Wessing managing partner Tan Chong Huat,
“We’ve started to focus on expanding our practices and grow future. One of the things we’ve planned is to bring back our regional network.”
Tan is planning to formalise relationships with firms that RHTLaw has been working with in the region. Tan launched RHT in June 2011 after taking 100 staff and lawyers, including 24 partners, from his former firm KhattarWong.
“It takes a while for things to stabilised and for our regional partners to choose which firms to work with. But it’s now a good time to consolidate our regional relationships,” said Tan.
In Indonesia, RHTLaw’s partners have worked closely with local counsel Hanafiah Ponggawa & Partners. The Jakarta-based firm is likely to one of RHTLaw Taylor Wessing’s association firms under its regional network.
Recently, RHTLaw has won mandate to be the legal advisor to the concession owner of Jakarta’s proposed monorail project, which is budgeted at $800m. It is expected to generate decade of work for the legal counsel.
“Increasingly firms based in Singapore are working on work and projects taking place in the neighbouring countries. We would like to have the ability to offer clients seamless services in all the ASEAN countries,” said Tan.
RHTLaw Taylor Wessing currently has 70 lawyers, including 25 partners. Most recently, the firm hired three new partners and launched its regional compliance solutions unit (19 July 2013).
