SJ Berwin and KWM vote looms

The world is about to change. As The Lawyer reports today, SJ Berwin partners are gearing up to vote on a combination with King & Wood Mallesons (KWM) next week.

This is potentially seismic stuff. As one source close to the talks said: “Momentum has gathered.” Indeed, following a seaside rendezvous in sandy Marbella to let the partners kick the tyres on the deal, the tectonic plates of the legal market now look to be shifting. Cue suitably portentous tunes penned by John Williams. Maybe.

As a result of the union, SJ Berwin would become one of four partnerships under KWM’s Swiss Verein, which already consists of financially independent arms in China, Hong Kong and Australia. And despite not integrating financially with KWM’s network, the SJ Berwin name – used by the firm since it was founded by Stanley J Berwin in 1982 – is set to be scrapped.

Forever (cue musical reprise, coda and fade. Literally).
