Number crunchers, your time is now

What an interesting time to be a COO. Particularly if you happen to be COO of a firm with world-domination plans.

As we report today, SJ Berwin has turned to management consultancy giant McKinsey & Company for the hire of its first COO as it edges closer to a potentially transformative merger with King & Wood Mallesons.

The firm’s move mirrors that of other top 20 UK firms that have made senior business appointments recently. In April, Ashurst – which is gearing up for a vote on the full integration of its offices in Australia – hired a CFO for the first time while this week the expansionist Herbert Smith Freehills also overhauled its financial team with the introduction of two new roles, global chief financial officer (CFO) and financial director for UK, EMEA and Asia.

Frankly with the myriad of financial structures and integration plans coursing through the market like an abacus on amphetamines, having a heavyweight chartered accountant or two knocking about the business makes a lot of sense.
