The development of regulations requiring earthquake resistance in buildings in Italy has been a complicated process, often resulting from a reaction to a specific event, an approach that makes creating a legal framework difficult, but with the coming into force of Presidential Decree no. 380/2001 the rules to be followed in the construction of new buildings were made clearer.
Much less clear, however, is the framework for the inspections to be carried out on existing buildings.
Firstly, there is a difficulty with the terminology: the inspections are sometimes called ‘checks’ and sometimes ‘safety assessments’ and it is not always easy to tell if they refer to the same legal obligation or to separate regulatory requirements…
