The Control of Housing & Work (Jersey) Law 2012, which has been in discussion for many years, came into force on 1 July 2013. The law replaces the Housing (Jersey) Law 1949, the Regulation of Undertakings & Development (Jersey) Law 1973 and the Hawkers and Non-Resident Traders (Jersey) Law 1965.

Broadly speaking, there are no significant changes to the principles behind the Housing Law, namely to control the occupation and ownership of property on the Island, or the Regulation of Undertakings Law, namely to control the setup of new business in the Island and to regulate the number of employees engaged in businesses in the Island.

The intention behind the law is to create one law to deal with all aspects of housing and business setup and for that law to be easier to interpret than the existing legislation, while introducing a more effective system of enforcement…
