Addleshaw Goddard’s savvy move in snapping up Skadden Arps litigatorKambiz Larizadeh – who appeared on the other side in the mammoth Berezovsky v Abramovich case – is an apt reminder that legal innovation is not be the sole preserve of volume private client businesses.
While City litigators are in a better position than most in terms of the growing imperative to innovate, Larizadeh told The Lawyer that Addleshaws’ willingness to take a modern approach to big ticket litigation was a big part of the firm’s appeal.
He said the firms were very different in their approach to dispute resolution, with Skadden preferring to use small teams of litigation partners and very few juniors, while Addleshaws has been pioneering commoditisation of the litigation process and the use of third-party funding.
Addleshaws head of litigation Simon Kamstra says that the firm shares clients in common with a number of magic circle and big American firms. Where once they would pick up the big-ticket litigation Addleshaws is now seeing it come to them – and so are their lawyers.
