Mishcon targets international strategy in new three-year plan

Mishcon de Reya has launched a root and branch review of its international strategy in preparation for a new three-year growth plan due to be launched next year.

The firm has hired Rita Jardim, the former administrative director of Mishcon’s international network Legalink, to help oversee the review.

The firm has also promoted Jenny Stebbing, a member of the business development team who focuses on employment, to a new position aimed at helping Mishcon focus on its relations with primarily UK intermediaries.

“As part of this exploratory stage before we have the new three-year plan we’re doing some technical analysis of our relations with other firms,” said the firm’s managing partner Kevin Gold, speaking in an interview for this week’s main feature. “Rita will be helping us look at our key relations outside the UK and the best model for us to move forward with.”

Mishcon’s next three-year plan is seen internally as critical to the firm’s development as it consolidates its move from a smaller West End litigation and property-driven practice to a significant player in the London mid-sized market. The firm’s current three-year plan, launched in April 2010, was principally focused on growing turnover. It has seen Mishcon grow its overall revenue from £47.5m to £73.1m.

The same period also saw Mishcon open an office in New York, its first and so far only overseas outpost.

“I don’t think [the new plan will] see us opening any offices, and I’m pretty certain we’ll remain an independent London-centric firm with a New York litigation office,” Gold added.

Among other items that are likely to be included in Mishcon’s next three-year plan will be new products related to its ABS conversion and an office move. The firm’s lease on its Red Lion Square headquarters has a break clause in 2017 and a decision on whether it will move to larger premises is likely to be made within the next six to 12 months.

Last month Mishcon won the Law Firm of the Year Award at The Lawyer Awards, primarily in recognition of how far the firm has developed in recent years.
