Zhong Lun has appointed Dechert’s Hong Kong managing partner Basil Hwang as a partner in its Hong Kong associate firm Boughton Peterson Yang Anderson (BPYA).
He moved to Dechert for the Hong Kong opening after a one-year stint at Paul Hastings as a partner and before that he was counsel at O’Melveny & Myers.
Hwang’s practice focuses on China private equity, M&A, investment funds and financial services industry. He cited the main reason for his move as that clients operating in Greater China are seeking full scale of support that only a large Chinese firm can offer.
Zhong Lun opened its Hong Kong office in 2010 and a year later it entered into association with 21-lawyer Hong Kong firm BPYA to strengthen its foothold in the market.
The firm has also been on a hiring spree in recent years, recruiting a large number of partners from leading local and international firms. Robert Lewis, former Beijing managing partner of legacy Lovells, Clifford Ng, former partner of K&L Gates’ Hong Kong office, and Carl Cheng, former Shanghai partner of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer (19 April 2012), are among the high-profile appointments.
“Basil’s experience with PRC-based clients and in complex cross-border transactions will add to our strength in advising on outbound investments by PRC clients,” said Victor Yang, BPYA’s managing partner.
There has been a growing trend of senior practitioners joining PRC firms from international firms. Most recently, former Edwards Wildman corporate partner Andrew Lui joined Fangda’s Hong Kong office as a partner (3 January 2014). Last November, former Norton Rose Beijing chief Peter Burrow joined Beijing-based firm DaHui as a senior consultant (7 November 2013).
