In the area of crime, his recent instructions have included allegations of murder, kidnap, rape and serious fraud. Butt has experience in regulatory crime and regularly acts for clients facing prosecution for breaches of trading standards, health and safety, BIS and licensing legislation.
He is also experienced in private prosecutions, advising and appearing for individuals and groups who wish to bring private criminal cases. Butt has defended and prosecuted a number of such cases, including advising members of Parliament and a former cabinet minister in relation to private prosecutions for alleged expenses fraud brought by individuals and pressure groups.
Butt has particular expertise in litigation concerning applications for and challenges to search warrants and production orders. He recently appeared in high-profile cases involving applications for production orders, including an application following serious disorder at the Syrian Embassy and investigations into corruption in Premier League football clubs.
He has also appeared in a number of significant inquests, is frequently instructed in cases involving the proceeds of crime and advises and appears for issuing judicial authorities, requesting governments and requested persons in extradition cases. He is also experienced in betting, gaming, taxi licensing, firearms licence applications and appeals and the regulation of the private security industry.
