Allen & Overy (A&O) has elected Andrew Ballheimer as its new managing partner, a week after the magic circle firm voted in Wim Dejonghe to the senior partner role.

Corporate co head Ballheimer beat three other contenders to the role – banking co-head Andrew Trahair, banking partner Michael Castle and Tokyo corporate finance partner Simon Black.

Ballheimer began his career at A&O as an associate in 1987, becoming a partner in 1994. He has been corporate co-head since 2010, and has since won roles on Virgin Money’s 2014 IPO, Virgin Active’s sale to Brait and VimpelCom’s merger with 3 Italia and WIND Telecomunicazioni.

He will start his term alongside Dejonghe from the start of May, with Dejonghe having already spent eight years in the leadership team as managing partner.

The change in leadership follows the retirement of senior partner David Morley, who has been in the role since 2008. Dejonghe would not have been able to run again for the managing partner position, having already served two terms in the role.
