Addleshaw Goddard has entered into redundancy talks with two associates in its Manchester-based employment team.
A source said that the wider group, which comprises 40 lawyers and eight partners, are not likely to be impacted by the move. The consultation process ends on Thursday (13 February 2014).
A spokesperson for the firm said: “We are consulting with two of our team across the North (out of a complement of 40) about a redundancy situation which reflects a change in our clients’ requirements, in particular, in a niche area.
“These are minor changes to ensure that we continue to run the group efficiently with a focus on servicing our clients effectively. In each case we are considering all of the alternatives open to us and, since the consultation is ongoing with those who are affected, it is neither fair nor appropriate for us to comment further at this stage.”
Manchester-based recruiters have stressed that the employment market is particularly competitive, adding that any redundancies in the area are unsurprising.
That said, the past five years have not been easy for Addleshaw Goddard. The firm announced redundancy consultations alongside its financial results in 2012 and 2011, cutting 24 fee-earners in 2012 and 40 support staff in 2011.
Addleshaws’ management admitted at the time that natural attrition rates had fallen among senior fee-earners, preventing younger lawyers from moving up the ranks (21 June 2012). In the five years to 30 April 2012, overall fee-earner numbers reduced from 490 to 437, but the two most senior fee-earner categories – managing associate and legal director – grew from 100 to 173.
