Welcome to Taylor Wessing’s analysis of clean energy investment activity in the fourth quarter of 2013 (4Q13). The year ended on a positive note, with European project finance, mergers and acquisitions, public markets and venture capital and private equity investment all increasing in comparison with the third quarter of 2013.
4Q13 was most notable for a 19 per cent quarterly surge in public markets activity to $945m (£570m), a two-year quarterly high. Some $809m of this figure was raised through five initial public offerings (IPOs), the most notable being Infinis’s $375m IPO on the London Stock Exchange in November 2013.
4Q13 also saw the continuation of the trend of renewable energy infrastructure funds raising capital on the public markets. Foresight Group secured $243m for its solar asset unit, the Foresight Solar Fund, through an IPO on the London Stock Exchange in October 2013, while Greencoat UK Wind secured $136m through a secondary offering in December 2013…
