Gavin Ferguson

Gavin Ferguson is the managing partner of the Guernsey office and practises in the Private Client & Trusts department. He provides contentious and non-contentious fiduciary services to high-net-worth individuals, corporate clients and charities.

Ferguson advises on all aspects of trust and foundation law, including in respect of their creation, reorganisation and administration. He also advises on regulatory matters and general private client matters (including probate) and has an interest in the Sharia and Sharia-compliant trust structures.

Chambers UK 2013 described Ferguson as having ‘an easy rapport’ with clients and peers, who rate his ‘in-depth knowledge’ and ‘sound technical skills’. He was named as a Leader in his Field by Chambers UK 2012. He was also named as a Leader in his Field by Chambers Europe 2011 and 2010.

Ferguson was described by Legal 500 2011 as having ‘extensive knowledge of trust law’ and being an ‘outstanding communicator’. He has also been recognised as one of the top 35 private client practitioners under 35 by Private Client Practitioner magazine in 2010 and 2011. He was also recognised in the 2011 and 2012 Citywealth Leaders List. This annual list aims to highlight the best of those individuals working in the wealth management sector.

He regularly contributes to various publications, as well as presenting at conferences, seminars and to clients.

Ferguson is a qualified English solicitor and Guernsey advocate. Before joinging Appleby in March 2010, he worked for another large offshore law firm in Guernsey and before that a well-known private client law firm in London.

He studied his Legal Practice Course at the College of Law in London. Prior to this, he studied for an MA in Legal Studies and a postgraduate diploma in Law. He also holds a degree in Business Economics and the Islamic Finance Qualification.

Ferguson is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, the International Tax Planning Association, the Guernsey International Legal Association and the Guernsey Association of Trustees and is a chartered member of the Securities Institute. He is also Guernsey’s representative of ISFIN, the leading network of Islamic finance law specialists.

He is personally licensed by the Guernsey Financial Services Commission to provide regulated services, including acting as a personal trustee, protector, director and counsel member.
